One of the most important goals for all people is viable opportunity for employment. Indeed, since WWII, vocational rehabilitation has been a federally funded effort and every state in the United States has a VR agency offered to people with disabilities. In Spite of our many years of work on this goal, however, the outcomes in the are are still not satisfactory. Some estimates suggest close to 75% of people with disabilities are either unemployed, or underemployed. This is unacceptable. This presentation takes a close look at the reasons why our systems have not been more successful in these goals, defines and delineates the concept of social capital and offers a community building perspective designed a shift the culture to be more inclusive and supportive. This new series of seminars provided jointly by Center for Disability Studies, Kent State University and the Hattie Larlham Research Institute is an opportunity for professionals to network and get some real solutions and answers to today's challenges for people with disabilities.
