Good Topics for a University Term Paper

There are so many different options out there for topic ideas, and so many topics that have already been done to death. It can be stressful for a student to decide if they’re given a vague limitation on what they can write about. It’s really just the starting point that is the hardest; once you have started writing and your topic is already chosen, it’s easier to keep working because of the momentum you have in the work itself. You just need to get started, even by taking out your notebook and pencil and writing “I don’t know what to write about, I’m just writing so that I’m starting something…” and eventually you’ll get going and it will be a breeze!

If you need some ideas to spark your brain about topics to choose from, the internet is the perfect place to look. After thinking about what already interests you, like if you play an instrument or draw or any other hobby, and you still are stumped for a topic, then read the list below and see if you can’t find one that you want to write about.

  1. Should animals be kept in zoos?
  2. Are athletes and actors paid too much?
  3. Should teachers have to follow a dress code or wear a uniform?
  4. Is the death penalty moral?
  5. Is fashion a worthwhile career?
  6. Should textbooks be replaced with laptops?
  7. Should money be spent on exploring space?
  8. What criteria contribute to a “good movie”?
  9. Is the destruction of earth’s forests inevitable?
  10. When is it appropriate to start dating?
  11. Should students in grade school be allowed cell phones?
  12. Should the age for voting be lowered?
  13. Should there be taxes on salty snacks and junk foods?
  14. Is it important to preserve and protect endangered animals?
  15. What would the world look like without any rules?

It’s a common problem to not know what topic to pick. Most students go through this, and it’s completely normal. That reasoning still doesn’t make it pleasant in the least. Taking the time that you need to get a solid topic idea down is worth it even though it may seem like a waste of time in the moment; it will save you time rewriting or changing your topic later on. Make sure you do decide ahead of time.
